Travel, Hospitality & Leisure

Travel, Hospitality & Leisure executive search & headhunting specialists

At Stone Executive, we partner with the businesses that host, feed and move people, appointing the senior leaders who run one of Britain’s largest consumer industries. Hospitality recruitment at this level is the search for the people who lead it: the managing directors, operations and brand leaders, and commercial and revenue heads who run hotels, restaurant groups, travel companies and leisure businesses where the product is the experience itself. We have appointed across hospitality for long enough to know its operators and rising leaders personally, and to recognise the difference between a polished interview and a leader who can hold service, standards and occupancy together at scale.

Senior hospitality executive search rests on knowing how experience businesses really run, from cover counts to RevPAR. The operations director who runs a hundred restaurants is a very different appointment from the revenue leader who prices a hotel estate or the commercial director who fills aircraft and holidays, and a generalist process rarely accounts for that. Our consultants work closely with operators, brands and investors across hotels, food and beverage, travel and leisure, which gives them a real understanding of where the talent sits and how to reach it. This is specialist Travel recruitment and Leisure recruitment, part of our wider consumer goods and services practice, applied to the appointments that shape the guest experience and the P&L behind it.

Travel, hospitality and leisure leaders we appoint

Most of our assignments in this sector sit at director and board level, where a single appointment shapes the guest experience across an entire estate. We appoint across the full breadth of the industry, from the executives who set strategy to the leaders who run operations, brands and revenue.

  • Managing directors and chief executives leading operators, brands and portfolios, supported by our board level practice.
  • Operations directors who run hotels, venues and multi-site estates to consistent standards.
  • Commercial, sales and revenue-management leaders who drive occupancy, pricing and distribution.
  • Brand, marketing and guest-experience directors who build the propositions customers choose.
  • Food and beverage, property and development leaders who create and grow the estate.

Areas we cover

Travel, hospitality and leisure is not a single market, and the right leader in hotels is rarely the obvious appointment in tour operating or fitness. Stone Executive recruits across the full range of the industry, matching each search to consultants who understand that specific market and its economics.

  • Hotels & resorts
  • Restaurants, pubs & food and beverage groups
  • Travel: tour operators, airlines & cruise
  • Leisure, attractions & entertainment venues
  • Fitness, wellness & clubs
  • Catering & contract services

This is the hospitality and travel industry across every format guests experience. Where a brief centres on the property and investment side of hotels, our real estate practice works alongside us so the right leader is appointed to the right remit.

What is changing in Hospitality and Travel leadership

The hospitality industry is being reshaped, a story our overview of the UK leisure sector follows, and the appointments organisations make now reflect it. Labour supply and cost have become the defining operational challenge, technology now drives booking, pricing and the guest journey end to end, and consumers increasingly spend on experiences but expect more for their money. Together they have rewritten the specification for hospitality leadership.

Owners and boards now brief accordingly. Where operators once wanted warm hosts and strong operators alone, they now look for leaders who can pair service culture with data-led revenue management, workforce innovation and disciplined cost control. The operators that appoint that combination are the ones growing while others hand back keys.

Why specialist Hospitality and Travel search matters

Hospitality rewards charisma at interview and then tests it against a whole estate and a payroll. A charismatic operator does not always make a managing director, and a leader who ran one great site is not necessarily the person to run eighty. A search that screens for the CV rather than the fit with the brand, the culture and the operating model is the usual reason a senior appointment disappoints, and at this level the cost is measured in falling standards and lost occupancy, not simply salary.

Sector experience is what separates the two. Our consultants know the travel, hospitality and leisure market well enough to check the substance behind a track record, estate by estate, and they do that checking before the shortlist is formed rather than after. It is the same research-led discipline that runs through all of our wider executive search work.

Our Hospitality and Travel search process

A Hospitality recruitment assignment with us proceeds through four defined stages, shaped to the role and the operator behind it. A named consultant leads the engagement from first conversation to appointment, supported by our in-house research team, and the four stages below move in order, with timing shaped by the organisation’s availability and the discretion the search requires.

Understanding the role. We begin with the chief executive, board or leaders who own the appointment, building a clear picture of the brand and estate, the guest and the numbers, the culture, and what the right person needs to achieve. For a managing director or operations appointment, that includes a candid conversation about the standards, growth and cost agenda the role must hold together.

Mapping the market. Drawing on our network and structured research, we identify the hospitality and travel leaders who genuinely fit, across competitor operators and the adjacent consumer sectors where the right experience can be found. Senior moves in a close-knit industry are sensitive, so this stage is handled with particular discretion.

Approaching candidates. The operators every board wants are running estates and being courted already; advertisements pass them by. What lands is a quiet, well-informed approach about a role that genuinely fits, which is exactly the approach our consultants are placed to make.

Shortlist to appointment. The result is a concise shortlist, each candidate documented against the brief: operational and commercial record, brand sensibility, leadership style and our candid view of fit. From there we manage the process through interviews and any assessment required, and on to offer and acceptance.

FAQs

What is considered the hospitality industry?

The hospitality industry covers businesses built on hosting people: hotels and accommodation, restaurants, pubs and catering, travel and tourism, and leisure and entertainment venues. What unites them is that the product is an experience delivered by people in the moment, which is why service culture and operational leadership matter more here than in almost any other industry.

What are the four main sectors of the hospitality industry?

The industry is commonly divided into four sectors: accommodation, covering hotels and resorts; food and beverage, covering restaurants, pubs and catering; travel and tourism, covering airlines, tour operators and cruise; and recreation and leisure, covering attractions, venues and fitness. Senior careers increasingly cross between them, and leadership experience transfers well across the four.

What does a hotel general manager do?

A hotel general manager runs every aspect of a property: the guest experience, the teams across rooms and food and beverage, the commercial performance, and the standards the brand promises. At larger properties and groups the role is a genuine senior leadership position with full P&L accountability, and the strongest general managers progress into area, operations and managing director roles across estates.

What is revenue management in hospitality?

Revenue management is the discipline of selling the right room, seat or table to the right customer at the right price, using data on demand, booking patterns and competitor rates to optimise occupancy and rate together. In hotels, airlines and increasingly restaurants, it has become one of the most commercially decisive functions, and senior revenue leaders are among the most sought-after appointments in the industry.

Is hospitality a good industry for senior leaders?

Hospitality offers senior leaders early P&L responsibility, large teams and immediate customer feedback, and its leadership skills transfer widely across consumer industries. It is operationally demanding, but the post-pandemic recovery in travel and experiences has renewed investment and growth across hotels, restaurants and leisure, and experienced multi-site leaders are in consistently short supply relative to demand.
