Technology and digital leadership specialists

Technology executive search is the discipline of identifying and appointing the senior technology leaders who shape how an organisation builds, scales, secures, and commercialises its technology. At Stone Executive, we partner with software businesses, technology vendors, and organisations across the UK to appoint exceptional technology leadership, including chief technology officers, chief information officers, chief data and AI leaders, chief information security officers, and the senior commercial leaders running technology and software businesses. Combining specialist sector knowledge, market insight, and a rigorous search methodology, we appoint leaders with the technical authority, commercial judgement, and governance discipline to drive performance, growth, and long-term success.

The right technology leader looks materially different at different points in an organisation’s life. A chief technology officer for a Series B SaaS business needs to ship product, recruit at pace and stretch a still-forming engineering organisation. In a FTSE 250 group the same title means something else: a complex estate to run, a transformation to lead and a board that thinks in terms of risk and return, not velocity. Most of the strongest technology leaders in either category are already in post elsewhere rather than visibly available. Reaching them takes a specialist technology headhunter with the right network and the credibility to make a discreet first call land. That’s the difference between the shortlist you need and the one you can find online.

Technology leaders we appoint

Stone Executive’s Technology practice encompasses leadership appointments from the executive committee to the board. Most engagements centre on a small number of roles where the calibre of the individual materially changes what the organisation can build and commercialise over the following two years.

Core technology roles we place

  • Chief Technology Officer (CTO) appointments, supported by our dedicated CTO recruitment practice
  • Chief Information Officer and Chief Digital Officer appointments, supported by our CIO and CDO practice
  • Chief Data Officer, Chief AI Officer, and Head of Data appointments
  • Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Head of Cybersecurity
  • VP of Engineering and Head of Engineering
  • VP of Product and Head of Product
  • Chief Architect and Head of Platform
  • Chief Executive and Chief Revenue Officer of technology and software businesses
  • Chair, Non-Executive Director, and senior advisory appointments to technology boards, supported by our board-level practice

Data and AI leadership

Data and AI leadership is now one of the most contested areas of senior technology recruitment. The chief data officer, chief AI officer, and head of data own the strategy that turns an organisation’s data into commercial advantage, and they govern its responsible use. Increasingly, these leaders sit alongside the CTO and CIO as a distinct voice on the executive committee. As a result, demand for proven leadership at this level consistently outstrips supply.

What separates a credible data or AI leader

We specialise in appointing data and AI leaders who combine genuine technical authority with the commercial judgement to prioritise the use cases that matter and the governance discipline that boards and regulators now expect. Written properly, the brief separates a research-led AI scientist from a leader who can operationalise data at scale, and a data platform builder from a leader who can set enterprise data strategy. That distinction is what produces a shortlist matched to the mandate itself.

A digital executive search brief, usually for a chief digital officer or a director of digital, centres on customer-facing products and channels and on the commercial change programme behind them. Digital transformation and cloud leadership fall within the same remit. Internal technology estate questions sit outside that brief, and the assessment criteria differ accordingly.

These appointments sit alongside our CIO and CDO practice. Some organisations give Digital its own executive owner while the chief information officer retains the internal estate; others combine both remits in a single mandate, which is common in mid-market and founder-led businesses. Where the remit is genuinely dual, the engagement runs through our chief digital officer appointments practice, and the brief establishes at the outset which side of the role carries the weight of the mandate.

Cloud and platform leadership

Cloud executive search covers the platform and infrastructure leaders a scaling technology business depends on: heads of platform, directors of cloud and infrastructure, and the chief architects who set technical direction. Assessment centres on the judgement to balance resilience, cost, and pace, and on the credibility to lead engineering teams through a migration the wider organisation is relying on. Where a business is moving from a managed estate to cloud-native infrastructure, that appointment often decides how quickly the transition delivers, and the shortlist is built on operating experience at comparable scale.

Technology sub-sectors we cover

Technology is not a single market, and a leader who excels in one sub-sector is not automatically the right appointment in another. Stone Executive operates across the principal sub-sectors of UK technology, and our consultants bring the contextual depth required to assess candidates inside their specific commercial and technical environment, and to look past the surface of a strong CV.

SaaS and software

Cloud-native software businesses, vertical SaaS players, and enterprise software vendors. We appoint CTOs, VPs of engineering, heads of product, and chief revenue officers who can scale a software business through its growth phases. See: software executive search.

Fintech and financial technology

Payments, lending, insurance technology, regtech, capital markets infrastructure, and digital banking. Our market infrastructure and fintech practice supports clients across the fintech leadership spectrum.

Cybersecurity

Demand for senior security leadership consistently runs ahead of supply. We appoint CISOs, heads of security, and chief executives of cybersecurity businesses across the UK. See: cybersecurity executive search.

Healthtech and medical technology

Digital health, clinical software, medical devices, and the wider healthtech market. See: healthtech executive search.

Telecoms and connectivity

Telecommunications operators, mobile and fixed-line businesses, network infrastructure, and connectivity providers. See: telecommunications executive search.

IT services and managed services

Our IT executive search covers consultancies, systems integrators, and managed service providers serving enterprise technology buyers. Where the mandate is for an internal technology function instead of a technology vendor, it is handled by our IT leadership executive search practice. See also: IT services executive search.

Internet and consumer technology

Marketplaces, platforms, e-commerce, and consumer-facing technology businesses, where the leadership profile is shaped as much by commercial and product judgement as by technical depth.

Why specialist technology search matters

Specialist technology search matters because generic technology executive recruitment fails in predictable ways. Briefs understate the complexity of the technical environment. Shortlists mistake the scale of a past employer for relevance to the role. Candidates join on the basis of a CV that read well, before anyone has had a proper conversation about what the next two years actually require. Each of those failure modes costs a board time and money, and the organisation loses momentum with it.

Specialism is the fix. Our Technology consultants have spent years working in the senior technology community across the UK, and the extensive networks, long-standing relationships, and genuine sector depth built over that time are what allow a search to reach the exceptional individuals who are already in post and not visibly available. The searches we run start with a brief that distinguishes a Series B CTO from a plc one, a security leader from a security architect, a data strategist from a data platform builder and a product VP from a product general manager. That precision in the brief produces precision in the shortlist, which is the difference between a strong appointment and a costly course correction six months later. It’s the same retained, research-led discipline that underpins our wider executive search work.

Choosing between technology executive recruiters

Technology executive recruiters differ more than their websites suggest, and four points separate them quickly. Ask whether the engagement is retained and exclusive, or contingent and shared with three other firms. Ask who will actually run the search, the consultant in the pitch or a researcher you will never meet. Sub-sector depth is the third test, and a firm should be able to evidence it in your specific market, not in technology generally. Off-limits protection is the fourth: what applies to your own leadership team once the search is complete? Putting those four points to a firm before commissioning a technology search tells a board more than any client logo wall.

Track record in technology appointments

Stone Executive has operated as a retained headhunting practice for twenty years, has completed more than 1,000 senior appointments across its sector practices and was recognised in the Financial Times’ UK’s Leading Recruiters 2024. Our Technology and digital leadership practice draws on that record, appointing chief technology officers, chief information officers, data and security leaders, and the chief executives of technology businesses for organisations throughout the UK.

Among UK technology executive search firms, the measure that matters is the proportion of appointments that hold, rather than the number completed. Every one of our senior technology appointments is retained and led personally by a named consultant, with our in-house research team behind it, and our purpose in each engagement is to secure the proven leaders a board needs to build, protect, and commercialise its technology. Success is a leader still in post and delivering two years after the appointment.

Recent Technology appointments include chief technology officers for private-equity-backed software businesses, chief information officers for regulated financial services groups, chief information security officers for listed organisations, and data and AI leadership for scaling technology companies across the UK.

Our technology search process

The technology search process is a retained, research-led sequence in four stages: brief and market map, discreet approach, assessment and shortlist, and appointment and onboarding. A named consultant leads the engagement from first conversation to start date, supported by our in-house research team, and a typical search runs eight to twelve weeks from briefing to offer acceptance.

Brief and market map

We work directly with the chief executive, the chair or the senior stakeholder who owns the appointment. Together we establish the role, the technical estate, the data and security context, the commercial reality and the kind of leader who will succeed. Time invested at this stage is what separates a strong shortlist from a generic one. We then identify candidates across the relevant sub-sector and adjacent areas, drawing on Stone Executive’s network of senior technology leaders and structured public-domain research.

What this stage delivers: an agreed role specification and weighted assessment criteria, a written candidate proposition, and a mapped long list that for senior technology roles typically runs to between one hundred and three hundred named individuals before refinement. Usually complete within the first two to three weeks.

Discreet approach

Senior technology leaders are usually in post and not visibly available. Reaching them well takes credibility and judgement, plus a clear sense of why this opportunity is worth a confidential conversation. Every approach is made by a consultant, never by an automated campaign, and no candidate is contacted before the proposition has been agreed with the client. Our consultants’ relationships in the technology community are what turn a discreet first approach into a serious conversation.

What this stage delivers: a qualified pool of engaged candidates, a documented view of who declined and why, and early market feedback on remuneration and positioning that frequently sharpens the brief itself. This stage typically runs from week three to week six.

Assessment and shortlist

Assessment in a technology leadership search goes beyond credentials and experience alone. We look for individuals whose technical judgement, leadership style, and values align with what the organisation actually needs, alongside the capacity to operate at the seniority the role requires. That is what turns a competent appointment into one that delivers lasting impact and long-term success. Each candidate is interviewed against the criteria agreed at briefing, in a structured format that produces comparable evidence rather than impressions. Referencing begins before the shortlist is presented, well ahead of any offer.

What this stage delivers: a shortlist of typically four to six candidates, each supported by a detailed written profile covering career history, evidence against the criteria, motivation, remuneration expectations, and our independent assessment. Shortlist presentation usually falls between week six and week nine.

Appointment and onboarding

We manage the formal interview rounds, advise on the structure and level of the offer, handle the negotiation and any counter-offer, and complete referencing and due diligence before the appointment is confirmed. Contact continues through the notice period, which at this seniority commonly adds a further three to six months before the appointed leader takes up the role. It continues into the first weeks in post, so that the transition is actively supported.

What this stage delivers: an accepted offer, completed references, a managed resignation and notice period, and a structured handover into the role. We remain in contact with both parties through the first months of the appointment.

FAQs

What is a technology executive?

A technology executive is a senior leader with board-level or executive-committee accountability for an organisation’s technology. The group includes the chief technology officer, chief information officer, chief digital officer, chief data or AI officer, and chief information security officer, alongside VPs of engineering and product. Ownership is what separates the two: a technology executive owns strategy, budget, risk and people, while a senior technologist owns delivery.

What are the big 5 executive search firms?

The five global firms usually described as the largest in executive search are Korn Ferry, Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles, Egon Zehnder, and Russell Reynolds Associates. They dominate the very largest multinational and listed-company mandates. Below that tier sits a substantial market of specialist UK practices, which is where most technology leadership mandates outside the FTSE 100 are actually completed, and where sub-sector depth and consultant continuity tend to be stronger.

Who is the best executive search firm?

There is no single best executive search firm, because the right partner depends on the seniority of the role, the sub-sector, and the size of the organisation. In practice, evidence beats reputation: sub-sector track record in the specific market, whether the engagement is retained and exclusive, who personally runs the search, the strength of the in-house research function, and the off-limits protection offered afterwards.

Is an executive recruiter worth it?

For senior technology appointments, the case rests on access and assessment. The leaders most organisations want are already in post, will not answer an advertisement, and will only consider a move if approached credibly and confidentially. A retained search also brings structured assessment, market intelligence on remuneration, and an independent view of the brief. For roles filled readily from applications, the case is much weaker.

How much do tech recruiters charge?

Fees for technology executive search are normally expressed as a percentage of the appointed candidate’s first-year total remuneration. Retained engagements are invoiced in three tranches: an instalment at engagement, a second when the shortlist is presented, and a final tranche on appointment. Contingent recruiters charge only on placement, at a lower percentage but without the research commitment. Seniority, sub-sector and complexity all shape the level, which is confirmed in writing before the engagement begins.

Do you handle digital and cloud leadership searches?

Yes. Chief digital officer, director of digital, and cloud and platform leadership appointments are run by the same Technology practice, on the retained, research-led process set out above. Where a brief spans both the customer-facing digital remit and the internal technology estate, we handle it jointly with our CIO and CDO practice.
