Executive Headhunting

Executive Headhunting services

Although Stone Executive offers a broad range of recruitment services, our primary methodology is Executive Headhunting. This highly specialised discipline involves identifying senior executives with a proven track-record at the very highest level. Whilst advertised selection draws candidates who are actively searching for a new position, executive headhunting enables firms to engage with people who aren´t currently in the market for a new job but who have the required assets and abilities. It´s about connecting with people at the pinnacle of their industry or functional sector.

Executive headhunting is a very precise form of recruitment - you stipulate the expertise and experience you´re looking for, then we leverage our knowledge and insight into the marketplace to identify those individuals with the profile to match. It´s the most effective way of attracting high calibre candidates with the capability and assets to deliver immediate impact.

Executive headhunting requires real depth of market knowledge and an extensive network of industry contacts, plus the professional credibility to ensure that any discreet approach to even the most high profile executive is warmly received. Our executive headhunting professionals have unrivalled knowledge of the markets in which they operate. They´re true specialists, and their network of contacts spans the UK market as well as pan-European and global corporations. So however challenging your brief, our consultants know just where to find the people with the skills and experience you´re looking for.

The work depends on three things: real depth of market knowledge, an extensive network of industry contacts, and the professional credibility to ensure that a discreet approach to a senior individual is warmly received. Our consultants have all three. They are true specialists with reach across the UK, pan-European, and global markets, and however demanding your brief, they know where to find the right person and how to bring them into the conversation.

What is Executive Headhunting?

Executive headhunting is the practice of identifying, approaching, and securing senior leaders who would not otherwise have entered a hiring process: the executive already in post somewhere else, the chief officer who has not flagged any intent to move, the board candidate who is approached on the basis of reputation rather than application. The work is direct, relationship-led, and conducted with absolute discretion, and it remains the most reliable way to bring genuinely high-calibre talent into a senior conversation.

A good Executive Headhunter is part researcher, part adviser, and part sector specialist, and the relationship a client builds with one is normally measured in years rather than single transactions. The terms Executive Headhunters UK and executive search consultants describe the same craft, used interchangeably across the UK market. What they share is a focus on the candidates who are not visible through any open process. Reaching those candidates is rarely a matter of one phone call. It is the result of a network built over years of placements, of carefully maintained relationships across a sector, and of the credibility that allows a senior executive to take a confidential call from a firm whose judgement they already trust.

How Stone Executive conducts a Headhunt

Each Stone Executive headhunt begins with a deep client briefing and ends with a senior leader in post, but the steps in between are shaped by the specific role, the sector, and the appetite of the candidate market. The work falls into four distinct phases.

Brief and market positioning. We begin by spending time with the client - typically the chief executive, chair, or owner - to understand not only the role but the business behind it. The brief covers the strategic context, the cultural environment, the kind of leader who will succeed in the role, and the kind of leader who will not. From that brief, we build a picture of the candidate market: the companies where the right candidates sit, the seniority bands, the geographic constraints, and any sector-specific factors that shape the search.

Targeted research and identification. Our consultants then work through their proprietary candidate database, sector network, and structured public-domain research to identify the leaders who fit the brief. For most senior appointments, the universe of plausible candidates runs to between one hundred and three hundred named individuals. The research phase narrows that universe down through reference calls and network conversations into a priority list of candidates to approach.

Discreet candidate approach. This is the part of headhunting that no other recruitment model replicates. Our consultants approach senior executives directly, by phone or by personalised written introduction, and the first conversation is rarely a pitch. It is a careful, professional exploration of whether the candidate is at a stage in their career where they would consider a move, framed in a way that respects their time, their seniority, and the confidentiality of the conversation. Strong executive headhunters earn the right to that first call through a track record of integrity, not through the strength of any single approach.

Shortlist, engagement, and appointment. The most promising candidates are taken through to formal client interviews, typically in a shortlist of four to six. Our consultants manage the candidate communication, the interview logistics, and any psychometric or referencing exercises the engagement requires, and we hold the process together through offer, negotiation, and the candidate’s resignation from their current role - the period when a senior appointment is most likely to come undone.

When Executive Headhunting is the right choice

Headhunting is the right methodology when the brief calls for a specific person, with a specific skill set, who is unlikely to come through advertising. That happens at every seniority level, in every kind of organisation, and our work reflects that.

Senior, board, and specialist appointments. The right candidate for a chief executive, board, or senior functional role is rarely on the open market. Reaching that candidate requires direct, professionally-conducted approach work, which is the work that UK executive headhunters exist to do, and the reason senior executive headhunting remains the dominant methodology for board and C-suite appointments.

Director and senior middle-management roles. A meaningful proportion of our work sits at director and senior middle-management level, particularly in sectors and functions where demand for experienced talent significantly exceeds supply. The methodology is the same as at C-suite level: a specific brief, a direct approach to the right individual, and a confidential, structured process from first conversation to appointment.

Markets where the candidate universe is small. Some sectors and functions have a candidate pool of fewer than one hundred plausible people across the UK. Mapping, identifying, and approaching that universe takes a depth of network and sector knowledge that contingent recruitment is not equipped to provide, and a generalist agency will rarely produce a credible shortlist for that kind of brief.

Confidential or sensitive appointments. Some appointments cannot be advertised, either because the incumbent has not yet been informed of the change, because the appointment signals strategic information that the company does not wish to share with competitors, or because the role itself is genuinely sensitive. Headhunting handles confidentiality as a core feature of the engagement, in a way that no advertised process or open application portal can.

While headhunting is most associated with board, chair, and chief officer appointments, a large proportion of our work is for senior and middle-management positions across multi-disciplinary industries, particularly where demand for experienced talent exceeds supply. And while we work with FTSE-listed groups and global corporations, a growing share of our headhunting work is for medium-sized businesses, owner-managed firms, and SMEs. The methodology is the same regardless of seniority or company size: a specific brief, a direct approach to the right individual, and a confidential, structured process from first conversation to appointment.

Each engagement is led by a senior consultant whose own background sits within the sector or function being recruited for, which is the foundation of the credibility that makes a discreet approach effective.

Our UK offices

FAQs

What is executive headhunting?

Executive headhunting is the discipline of finding and securing senior leaders who would not otherwise have entered a hiring process, by approaching them directly, confidentially, and on the basis of their reputation rather than any application they have made. It is the methodology used for chief executive succession, board appointments, and senior functional hires, where the right candidate is almost always already in post elsewhere.

Are headhunting and executive search the same thing?

In UK practice, the two terms are used interchangeably. Executive headhunting and executive search both describe the retained, research-led approach to senior recruitment in which the firm works exclusively for the hiring client and approaches passive candidates directly, rather than processing inbound applications. Some firms prefer one term to the other for branding reasons, but the underlying craft is the same.

How much do executive headhunters charge?

Stone Executive’s headhunting engagements are typically priced as a percentage of the appointed candidate’s first-year compensation, paid in three tranches across the engagement: an initial instalment at engagement, a second when a shortlist is presented, and a final tranche on appointment. The fee covers the methodology, the network access, and the senior consultant time committed to the engagement, and is confirmed in writing at the start of the search. There is no fee to candidates - headhunting is paid for entirely by the hiring client.

How long does a headhunt take?

A typical Stone Executive headhunt runs ten to sixteen weeks from engagement to offer, with a further two to three months before the appointed candidate joins, depending on their notice period. Searches at chief executive or chair level often take longer, particularly where multiple stakeholders need to be aligned or where regulatory approval is required before appointment.

Will my search remain confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is built into every Stone Executive engagement and is one of the principal reasons clients choose the headhunting model. The role is not advertised, candidates are approached directly under non-disclosure conditions, and the client’s identity is not shared with candidates until interest is genuine and the conversation has progressed.

What sectors do you headhunt in?

Stone Executive operates across all major sectors of the UK economy, with deep specialisation in financial services, healthcare, technology, industrial, education, public sector and not-for-profit, business and professional services, and consumer goods. Each engagement is led by a consultant whose own background sits within the sector being recruited for.
