Retail executive search & headhunting specialists

At Stone Executive, we partner with the retailers competing for the British consumer, appointing the senior leaders who run one of the country’s largest and most unforgiving industries. Retail recruitment at this level is the search for the people who lead it: the managing directors, buying and merchandising leaders, digital and e-commerce heads, and operations directors who decide what a retailer sells, how it reaches customers and whether the numbers work. Retail search has been part of our work for years, and the network that comes with it, across grocery, fashion, general merchandise and the consumer brands behind them, lets us tell a genuine trader from a well-presented CV in a market that punishes hesitation.

Senior retail executive search starts from an understanding of how retailers actually make money: range, margin, stock and the customer. The buying director who shapes a range is a very different appointment from the e-commerce leader who grows the digital channel or the operations director who runs hundreds of stores, and a generalist process rarely accounts for that. Our consultants work closely with retailers across every major category, store-led and online, which gives them a real understanding of where the talent sits and how to reach it. This is specialist Retail headhunting, part of our wider consumer goods and services practice, applied to the appointments that decide who wins the customer.

Retail leaders we appoint

Most of our assignments in this sector sit at director and board level, where a single appointment shapes a retailer’s proposition, its costs and its customer experience. We appoint across the full retail model, from the executives who set direction to the leaders who run product, channels and operations.

  • Managing directors and chief executives leading retailers, brands and divisions, supported by our board level practice.
  • Buying, merchandising and trading directors who shape ranges, margins and stock.
  • Digital and e-commerce directors who grow the online channel and the experience behind it.
  • Retail operations directors who run store estates, people and service at scale.
  • Supply chain, property and finance leaders who keep the model efficient, supported by our procurement and supply chain practice.

Areas we cover

Retail is not a single market, and the right leader in grocery is rarely the obvious appointment in luxury or pure-play online. Stone Executive recruits across the full breadth of the industry, matching each search to consultants who understand that specific market and its economics.

  • Grocery, convenience & discount
  • Fashion, footwear & luxury
  • General merchandise, home & DIY
  • Health, beauty & pharmacy
  • Online & pure-play e-commerce
  • Retail services, franchising & wholesale

This is the retail industry across stores, online and everything between, and the FMCG and consumer brands that trade alongside it. Where a brief sits with the brands that supply retail rather than the retailer itself, our consumer goods practice leads, so the right leader is appointed to the right remit.

What is changing in Retail leadership

Retail is being reshaped, as our review of the UK retail landscape explores, and the appointments organisations make now reflect it. Customers move constantly between stores, apps and marketplaces, cost pressure has made productivity and supply chain discipline decisive, and data and loyalty have become the battleground on which ranges, prices and marketing are set. Every one of them has stretched the retail director’s brief further.

Ask any chair what they want now and the answer has changed. Where retailers once promoted the best merchant or the best operator, they now look for leaders who can trade product and run channels while rebuilding the cost base and the technology beneath them. The retailers that appoint that combination are the ones taking share in a flat market.

Why specialist Retail search matters

Retail finds out a wrong appointment faster than any other industry; the weekly numbers see to that. A strong merchant is not automatically a managing director, and a digital leader from another sector is not necessarily the person to run trading in a business where margins are measured in fractions. A search that screens for the CV rather than the fit with the customer, the culture and the commercial model is the usual reason a senior appointment disappoints, and at this level the cost is measured in lost trade and markdowns, not simply salary.

The remedy is market knowledge applied early. Our consultants live close enough to the retail and consumer market to interrogate a candidate’s real trading record, and they do it at the briefing stage, so the shortlist arrives already tested. It is the same research-led discipline that runs through all of our wider executive search work.

Our Retail search process

Our Retail recruitment work runs through four disciplined stages, adjusted to the seniority of the role and the retailer’s situation. A named consultant leads the engagement from first conversation to appointment, supported by our in-house research team, and the four stages below move in order, with timing shaped by the organisation’s availability and the discretion the search requires.

Understanding the role. We begin with the chief executive, board or leaders who own the appointment, building a clear picture of the retailer’s proposition and customer, its channel mix, the culture, and what the right person needs to achieve. For a managing director or trading appointment, that includes a candid conversation about where the numbers really stand and what the role must turn around or grow.

Mapping the market. Drawing on our network and structured research, we identify the retail leaders who genuinely fit, across competitor retailers, consumer brands and the adjacent sectors where the right experience can be found. Senior moves in a market that watches its rivals closely are sensitive, so this stage is handled with particular discretion.

Approaching candidates. Retail’s best leaders are mid-trading-year, incentivised and watched by their competitors, so they do not answer advertisements. They do take a discreet, knowledgeable call about the right role, and we are known enough in the market to make it.

Shortlist to appointment. What reaches you is a tight shortlist, every candidate written up against the brief: trading record, digital and operational strengths, leadership style and our own assessment. From there we manage the process through interviews and any assessment required, and on to offer and acceptance.

FAQs

What does retail management do?

Retail management runs the day-to-day trading of a retail business: leading store or channel teams, managing stock and presentation, driving sales and service, and controlling costs. At senior level that scales up to retail operations directors responsible for entire store estates and the customer experience across them. It is the discipline that turns a retailer’s strategy into what customers actually encounter.

What skills are needed for senior retail management?

Senior retail leadership demands commercial sharpness, strong people leadership across large and dispersed teams, and increasingly fluency with data and digital channels. The best retail directors combine trading instinct, the ability to read a P&L line by line, and the resilience to make fast decisions in a market that changes weekly. Experience across both stores and online has become close to essential at the top of the industry.

What does a buying director do?

A buying director leads what a retailer sells: selecting and negotiating ranges, managing supplier relationships, and working with merchandising to get the right stock in the right places at the right margin. The role shapes the retailer’s proposition more directly than almost any other, and the best buying directors pair sharp commercial negotiation with genuine feel for the customer and the market’s direction.

What is the difference between buying and merchandising?

Buying decides what a retailer sells, selecting products and negotiating with suppliers. Merchandising decides how much, where and when, planning stock, allocating it across channels and managing markdown. The two disciplines work as a pair, and at director level retailers look for leaders who understand both sides, because range and stock decisions together determine the margin the business actually makes.

Is retail a good industry for senior leaders?

Retail offers senior leaders scale, pace and accountability that few industries match: large teams, immediate feedback from customers, and P&L responsibility early. It is also demanding, with thin margins and constant structural change. Leaders who succeed in retail are highly transferable, and the industry increasingly welcomes executives from consumer, digital and supply chain backgrounds into its senior roles.
