Biotech executive search & headhunting specialists

At Stone Executive, we partner with the organisations turning science into medicine, appointing the senior leaders who take a discovery from bench to breakthrough. Biotech executive search is the search for the people who lead that translation: the chief executives, chief scientific and medical officers, and development and operations leaders who build companies around a molecule, a platform or an idea. Because we have spent years appointing into biotechnology, our reach spans the founders, big-pharma operators and investors who make up the market, and we know how to spot the leader who will hold a science-led business together through funding rounds, trials and growth.

Senior Biotech recruitment is its own discipline, because biotech leadership is unlike any other. The founding scientist who conceives a therapy is rarely the chief executive who scales the company, and the leader who thrives in a global pharmaceutical group may struggle in a business of forty people burning investor capital against a clinical milestone. Our consultants work closely with biotechnology companies and their investors across the UK, particularly in the golden triangle of Cambridge, Oxford and London where much of Europe’s biotech is built. This is specialist life sciences recruitment at the sharp end, part of our wider life sciences practice, applied to the appointments investors and boards care about most.

Biotech leaders we appoint

Most of our assignments in this sector sit at board and executive level, where a single appointment can determine whether a company reaches its next milestone or its next funding round. We appoint across the leadership team of science-led businesses, from the executives who set direction to the leaders who deliver the science.

  • Chief executives and managing directors leading biotech companies from seed stage to listing, supported by our board level practice
  • Chief scientific officers and heads of research who own the science and the platform
  • Chief medical officers and development leaders who design and run clinical programmes
  • Chief financial and business officers who raise capital and strike the partnering deals
  • Operations, manufacturing and quality leaders who industrialise the science, including CMC and biologics manufacturing

Areas we cover

Biotechnology is not a single market, and the right leader for a cell therapy company is rarely the obvious appointment in diagnostics or industrial biotech. Stone Executive recruits across the full range of modalities and business models, matching each search to consultants who understand that specific science and its investors.

  • Therapeutics: small molecule, biologics & vaccines
  • Cell & gene therapy
  • Platform technologies & drug discovery (including AI-led)
  • Diagnostics & genomics
  • Industrial & agricultural biotech
  • CDMO, bioprocessing & manufacturing

This is the biotechnology market from start-up to scale. Where a company matures towards commercial launch our pharmaceutical practice works alongside us, and for device and digital businesses our medical device practice leads, so the right leader is appointed to the right remit.

What is changing in Biotech leadership

Biotechnology is being reshaped, and the appointments companies make now reflect it. Artificial intelligence is changing how drugs are discovered, cell and gene therapies have created entirely new manufacturing and regulatory challenges, and a tighter funding environment has made investors more demanding about the leadership teams they back. Boards and investors have raised the bar on biotech leadership accordingly.

We see it in every mandate. Where companies once wanted scientific brilliance above all, they now look for leaders who can pair it with capital discipline, credible development plans and the ability to partner with big pharma from a position of strength. The companies that appoint that blend are the ones that survive the funding cycle and reach their milestones.

Why specialist Biotech search matters

In biotech, an appointment can look inspired on announcement day and prove wrong within a funding cycle. A distinguished academic does not always make a chief scientific officer, and a big-pharma executive is not necessarily suited to a company where the entire strategy can turn on one data readout. A search that screens for pedigree rather than the fit with the company’s stage, science and investors is the usual reason a senior appointment disappoints, and at this level the cost is measured in missed milestones and lost funding, not simply salary.

Avoiding that outcome takes market knowledge, not process. Our consultants know the life sciences market well enough to weigh what a candidate actually contributed to past programmes and raises, and they apply that scrutiny from the first briefing, so the shortlist that reaches the board has already survived it. It is the same research-led discipline that runs through all of our wider executive search work.

Our Biotech search process

A Biotech search with us moves through four stages, calibrated to the company’s stage and runway. A named consultant leads the engagement from first conversation to appointment, supported by our in-house research team, and the four stages below move in order, with timing shaped by the funding clock and the discretion the search requires.

Understanding the role. We begin with the chief executive, board or investors who own the appointment, building a clear picture of the science, the development stage, the funding position, the culture, and what the right person needs to achieve. For a CEO or CSO appointment, that includes a candid conversation about how the company’s story will land with the candidates strong enough to lead it.

Mapping the market. Drawing on our network and structured research, we identify the biotech leaders who genuinely fit, across competitor companies, big pharma and academia where the right experience can be found. Senior moves in a small, well-connected community are sensitive, so this stage is handled with particular discretion.

Approaching candidates. The leaders biotech boards want are mid-programme, funded and courted constantly; no advertisement reaches them. What does is a discreet approach from a consultant who can speak credibly about the science, the investors and why this role deserves their attention.

Shortlist to appointment. The outcome is a short, rigorously argued list of candidates, each profiled in writing: scientific and commercial substance, leadership history, and our honest view of their fit. From there we manage the process through interviews and any assessment required, and on to offer and acceptance.

FAQs

What is biotechnology?

Biotechnology uses living systems, cells and biological processes to create products and technologies, most prominently new medicines. In healthcare it spans biologic drugs, vaccines, cell and gene therapies and diagnostics; beyond it, industrial and agricultural biotech apply the same science to materials, food and sustainability. The UK is one of Europe’s leading biotech markets, anchored by the research strength of Cambridge, Oxford and London.

Is biotech in high demand?

Yes, particularly at leadership level. The science is advancing faster than the pool of people who have taken a therapy through development, manufacturing and approval, so experienced chief executives, chief scientific officers and chief medical officers are consistently scarce. Demand is strongest in cell and gene therapy, biologics manufacturing and AI-led discovery, where genuinely experienced leaders are few and companies compete hard to secure them.

Is a career in biotechnology worth it?

For senior professionals, biotech offers work of genuine consequence, meaningful equity upside and a market where experienced leadership is scarce. It also carries real risk: companies live and die by data readouts and funding rounds, and careers move between ventures rather than up one ladder. Leaders who can tolerate that uncertainty are rewarded with faster responsibility and broader remits than most industries can offer.

Is biotechnology a high paying field?

At leadership level, yes. Chief executives, chief scientific officers and chief medical officers of funded biotech companies command substantial packages, and equity typically forms a significant part of total reward, with real upside if the science succeeds. Cash salaries at earlier-stage companies can sit below big-pharma equivalents, which is precisely why equity matters, and why leaders weigh the quality of the science and the investors as carefully as the salary.

What is the difference between biotech and pharma?

Traditionally, pharmaceutical companies are large, commercial-stage businesses selling approved medicines, while biotech companies are smaller, science-led ventures developing new therapies, often before revenue. The line has blurred as biotechs scale and pharma buys their science, but the leadership challenge remains distinct: biotech leaders build companies around unproven science and investor capital, while pharma leaders run established portfolios at global scale.
